Colorado courts do not use the phrase "child custody". Instead, you will hear about parenting time and decision-making authority. The distinction is exactly what it sounds like, and together both concepts equate to what is commonly referred to by non-lawyers (you know: normal people) as child custody.
In the past, the court awards custody to the primary parent, or the one who spends the most time with the children, leaving out the other parent and making them seem like a seasonal visitor. After the changes, the court focuses on the healthy sharing of responsibilities, including making the decisions regarding the children's education, health, religion, extra-curricular activities etc. and spending parenting time, which used to be called visitation, with the children.
