We commute to our office in Centennial, and we experience nearly daily just how dangerous the route between home and work can be. I-25 near Larkspur is especially dangerous, as semi-trucks travel at the 75mph speed limit (or more) and drivers enter into the often-unpredictable Monument Hill corridor.
Although Larkspur is the smallest town in Douglas County, the area is home to several beautiful neighborhoods, including Bear Dance and Perry Park. Larkspur also draws in the crowds in the summer and has no small amount of fame, thanks to the Colorado Renaissance Festival. Motorcyclists, cyclists, and weekend drivers love to travel 105/South Perry Park Road from Palmer Lake to Sedalia for the scenic views along Sandstone Ranch and the foothills. Sadly, all of this traffic in combination with rural roadways can sometimes lead to tragedy.
Because of the volume of visiting traffic, Larkspur has earned a highlight in Douglas County’s 2050 Transportation Plan as a safety risk. Perry Park Road in particular has earned focus for improvement as one of the county’s more treacherous rural roads and one in need of urgent attention. The Plan states, “A leading candidate for roadway showcasing growing conflicts with recreational and commuting traffic trend is CR 105, between
Palmer Lake and Sedalia. CR 105 is a scenic rural roadway that provides access to many of Douglas County’s preserved open spaces. The roadway also is experiencing increases in both recreational activity because of the quality of open spaces and the quality of the ride for roadway cyclists. These increasing recreation activities correspond with increasing commuting traffic from rural areas and alternative routes by traditional I-25 motorists.” In the figure below, the red areas indicate areas of increased traffic collisions. Despite the rural nature of most of Larkspur, you can see that the area still has hot spots.
